A Time for Jubilee

On Saturday, April 12, seventeen residents celebrated a combined 1100 years of service as the Villa marked its spring jubilees. The Villa community honored Sisters Marion Aherne, Francis Thomas Catterall, Catherine Comly, Berenice Harp, Marie Esther Kenny, Miriam Magdala McDevitt, Catherine Elizabeth Murphy, Ann Geraldine Nugent, Agnes Albert Scheckenbach and Ann Augustine Snyder for their 70 years as Sisters of Saint Joseph. Also celebrating were S. Robert Therese Arnot, Rose Magill, Daniel Margaret O’Connor, Rita Rodgers and Marie Michael Wanzie for their 60 years and Sisters Mary Agnes Casey and Arleen Renshaw who were golden jubilarians. The celebration included Eucharistic Liturgy followed by a dinner prepared for family and friends by the Villa Dining Services.

An ExZOOberating Field Trip

On Friday, May 23, residents and staff boarded vans and cars and headed east where they spent a glorious day at the Philadelphia Zoo. Bright sunshine and a cool breeze made for a delightful time for Villa visitors to spend with their favorite animals and enjoy a picnic lunch outdoors. Among the highlights of the day was time spent in the petting zoo.

Volunteers - the Heart of the Community

The Villa community joined with the rest of the country in honoring volunteers for the gift of their time and talent. On Wednesday, April 30, Villa volunteers were recognized at a special liturgy of thanksgiving during which those who have contributed at least 500 hours of service received special pins. All volunteers received a special gift from Villa residents – scarves and neckties covered with hearts to convey that volunteers are the heart of the Villa community. A delicious lunch prepared by Villa Dining Services followed the Mass.

Nursing - the Heart of Healthcare

The Villa celebrated National Nurses Week from May 5 through May 12, ending on the birthday of Florence Nightingale. The Nursing Department was honored with a special picture display in the lobby area and with a delicious meal for all three shifts. During the week, the nursing department received special pins and a blessing of hands in appreciation for their healing and compassionate ministry. Professional nurses received a surprise gift – a canvas bag with the words “I Survived Millennium Go Live,” acknowledging their untiring efforts in the transition to Millennium Pharmacy.

Love is Ageless

Garden Club

During May, the Villa community celebrated Older Americans Month with fun and exciting events. On Friday evening, May 16, sister residents gathered in the Chapel for a prayer service, “Love is Ageless” followed by a Happy Hour on the indoor patio where they enjoyed “mocktails” and appetizers. The auditorium was papered in quotes of appreciation from residents as employees gathered for their annual appreciation luncheon on Wednesday, May 21. Staff members were honored with “Years of Service” awards. Barbecue smells and disco music surrounded the patio where residents and staff enjoyed the first picnic of the season. The cool, sunny day offered perfect picnic weather.

With the coming of spring came the rebirth of the Garden Club who meets every Friday morning at the Villa. On May 9, they held their own version of the Flower Show. Throughout the month of May members of the Activities Department and volunteers assisted residents in planting seedlings in raised garden beds. When you come to the Villa, be sure to come to the patio to enjoy the blossoms of their indoor planting efforts!

Mothers Day

On Sunday, May 11, the Villa Community joined the rest of the country in recognizing the gift of Mothers. The day began with the delivery of wrist corsages for mothers on the second and third floors. Families joined their mothers for the Pentecost liturgy followed by a delicious brunch prepared by dining Services.
