As we look forward to the celebration of Saint Joseph Villa’s 50th birthday in 2018, we are actively engaged in a time of renewal and revitalization which touches every aspect of Villa life, including the renovation of the building itself! At this time in the life of our building, we need to do a major upgrade to the infrastructure of the building: its mechanical, electrical, and plumbing components.
A second aspect on which we need to focus is the look and feel of our building. In the 1960’s, best practice was to model nursing homes on hospitals thus creating the beginning of what we call the medical model of care. Best practice today is very different. We are moving away from the traditional medical model to create environments of care that are more like home and community and based on a social model that supports meaningful life for our elders.
Flowing from our mission of unity, our vision is “to create home/community in which our residents want to live and in which they thrive.” Decisions made to renovate our building have been guided by this vision. To that end, we are creating two “households” on each floor. This will enable us to have a smaller number of residents living together in a community that is self-contained, having all that is needed to support the life of the community. Each community will have its own front door leading to a living room, dining room, and kitchen with ample gathering space for all. Each resident will continue to have a private bedroom with an adjoining bathroom complete with a shower that is shared by two residents.
The renovations will be done in phases and will last about 2 1/2 – 3 years. Phase one involves the renovation of the bedrooms and the adjoining bathrooms with built-in showers on the D Wing corridor and simultaneously on all floors! At the same time, renovations will happen in the shared community space located in the core areas on each floor.
Additional renovations will take place on the first floor of the Villa including the remake of our community room which will include a coffee shop, a new gift shop, and a new beauty parlor. In the basement, we will be enlarging and enhancing our rehabilitation / therapy gym as well as creating a wellness gym for use by residents who are more independent.
